I passionately create art that stirs the soul, that connects not only to the beauty and joy of the human experience, but also to what lives beyond what is visible. I am a contemporary artist, illustrator and designer. Working out of my studio in Northern California, surrounded by the beautiful forest trees of Sierra Nevada, I am filled with gratitude to the many admirers of my art and collectors. It thrills me to always be busy creating joyful abstract paintings rich in color and texture.
Painting, building layer upon layer, a rich history develops much like memories. I approach the process loosely, intuitively interacting with my canvas; it is very much like an active meditation for me. Vivid, emotional landscapes emerge, telling stories through raw color, texture and symbolism. Many of my collectors have shared that they ‘appreciate the moods my work provokes inside them.’ I am inspired by the mysteries of creation - the vastness of the cosmos, the human psyche, mind and heart, DNA, patterns, rhythms, symbols, codes, alchemy, archetypes, astrology, courage, joy and the beauty of nature. Again, what lives beyond what we see.
Over the past 30 years, award winning fine artist Karen Feiling has become wildly known for her vibrant, emotive abstract paintings, whimsical illustrations and heirloom sculptural body casting.
She works with a broad spectrum of mediums and nothing is off limits. Karen has shown her work throughout a variety of venues all across Northern California, including juried art shows, fund raising events and has been the featured artist at numerous gallery showings.

Employee Appreciation Mural |
LifeSTEPS approached me with the opportunity to come up with a "Joy-full" design concept that reflected their work in the community. Beth Southorn met with me and asked that I watch a TED Talk by Ingrid Fetell, called “Where Joy Hides and How to Find It.”
As an artist, I deeply resonated with the idea of being a creator of joy. It’s who I want to be. It's how I want to be in the world. I was so moved I even cried a bit. Beth teased me a little and said “Well, that was easy” She’s great! A true powerhouse!
The mission of LifeSTEPS is to provide effective educational and supportive services to maximize the strengths of individuals and build resilient communities. Beth’s commitment to the community is profound and her passion for her team is no secret. The gratitude poured out in her energy when talking about this mural as a gift to them.
This mural was my attempt at combining the LifeSTEPS mission statement and the “science of Joy” while creating a beautiful softness to this space, for this awesome team to enjoy.
Mural title: “Hive Mind”
The hive mind consciousness is defined as the collective mental activity expressed in the complex, coordinated behavior of a colony or community, sharing knowledge, thoughts and resources for the greater good of the whole.
That… is what I see happening here. Thank you for the good work you are doing.
